More than one hundred people have died in China this year alone due to the country’s soaring suicide rate, prompting authorities to push for tougher measures to control the phenomenon.
A total of 1,977 people have taken their own lives since the beginning of May, according to the Ministry of Health.
More than 400 of them are aged between 15 and 50.
A government statement released on Tuesday said the latest figures were a reminder of the dangers of the “unhealthy lifestyle” that has taken root in China and that it will continue to face “a new generation of young people who are at risk of harming themselves”.
“The ministry will continue the urgent and concerted efforts to prevent and control the problem,” the statement said.
More to come.
